Classic Porn: A Night at the Adonis

A Night at the AdonisIf you long for a return to the hedonism of the 1970s, then movies like this are exactly what you need. “A Night at the Adonis” takes us to the kind of “blue” movie theatre that people used to see adult movies in back before we had the ability to watch them at home. The Adonis was an infamous Times Square gay cinema in the ’70s.

This is a plot-driven movie with five major sex scenes. We go on a little tour of the place with a new employee named Joel as he gets shown around and told about the regulars and their different cruising styles. Joel got the job because of his degree in “gay business management” (specializing in steam baths and travel, mmm, wonder what the final exams were like?). There are moments of winking humor like that tossed liberally into the script.

Throughout the movie, we follow characters like gay porn icon Jack Wrangler on a night at the Adonis, with a slight detour for a suck and fuck at a hair salon. This is, of course, not the same structure that many of today’s gay pornos follow, but it’s still the kind of movie that you can put on and enjoy yourself without having to follow too much dialogue or plot.

These are mostly butch men with body hair. Thanks to the setting and the atmosphere of that era of gay life, there’s a very seedy feel to all the action that makes it that much hotter. “A Night at the Adonis” is as interesting for its historic value as it is for the fucking – this is a bygone era and although you wouldn’t necessarily want to live in those days again, there is something very nostalgic about it for anybody who was there and exotic for anyone who wasn’t. It’s a real pre-condom classic and definitely worth a look.
